Computer Science Vs Computer Engineering

Today, electrical and computer engineering intersects from miniaturized integrated electronics to large-scale power plants; from single-transistor devices to networks comprising a billion nodes. There are a great many ways to describe the computer engineering definition, but one of the ways is a professional who has network, systems, and software engineering experience. Computer engineering is also a term that can be used to describe a person who has a background in electrical engineering.

The departmental mission is to provide the right nurturing environment in order to produce graduates with exceptional creative thinking and problem solving skills to become creative members of the society. This shall be achieved by exposing them to world class curriculum, state of the art labs, access to latest research and exposure to latest technical trend via strong industrial-academic linkage. This specialty of computer engineering requires adequate knowledge of electronics and electrical systems. Engineers working in this area work on enhancing the speed, reliability, and energy efficiency of next-generation very-large-scale integrated circuits and microsystems. An example of this specialty is work done on reducing the power consumption of VLSI algorithms and architecture.

Every effort should be made by instructors to create excitement, interest and sustained enthusiasm in computer engineering students. Computer hardware engineers use computer programming tools to analyze the digital circuits in hardware to determine the best design. Many hardware engineers design devices used in manufactured products that incorporate processors and other computer components and that connect to the Internet. For example, many new cars, home appliances, and medical devices have Internet-ready computer systems built into them. Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as circuit boards. Computer Engineering is the field that studies the science and technology of design, implementation and validation of both hardware and software components of computing systems.

Embedded Systems

Computer engineering is defined as the discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. Computer engineering has traditionally been viewed as a combination of both computer science and electrical engineering . It has evolved over the past three decades as a separate, although intimately related, discipline. Computer engineering is solidly grounded in the theories and principles of computing, mathematics, science, and engineering and it applies these theories and principles to solve technical problems through the design of computing hardware, software, networks, and processes. Some computer engineering jobs may be available to professionals with only a bachelor’s degree.

Degree Requirements

Increasingly, computer engineers are involved in the design of computer-based systems to address highly specialized and specific application needs. Computer engineers work in most industries, including the computer, aerospace, telecommunications, power production, manufacturing, defense, and electronics industries. They design high-tech devices ranging from tiny microelectronic integrated-circuit chips, to powerful systems that utilize those chips and efficient telecommunication systems that interconnect those systems. Applications include consumer electronics and advanced microprocessors, peripheral equipment, systems for portable, desktop and client/server computing, and communications devices .

CPED is committed to produce graduates having solid foundation of computing systems design & development, and strong professional practices to adopt rapidly changing social and technological trends. A firmware engineer develops the low-level software found in home computers and electronic devices. They must be versed in both sides of the hardware and software interface and program efficient algorithms that will allow devices to operate both correctly and safely. Our faculty in the BS in Computer Engineering program have decades of experience working in robotics, aeronautics, embedded systems, and many other related fields. These are just a few of the faculty who teach core courses in the program.

Bachelors Of Science In Computer Engineering

Because it is open source, Linux provider users with the ability to customize how their computer works and what applications it can complete. An important function of computer engineers is to integrate these components into computer and network systems. Namely, computer engineers are often required to provide assistance across the board, which includes their less technically knowledgeable colleagues. In large companies, computer engineers often communicate directly with clients and vendors – the task that calls for impeccable active listening skills. The usual prerequisite for a computer engineer is a Bachelor’s degree, but in actual fact this is just the beginning. Most computer engineers have advanced degrees and/or have acquired additional certification.

For example, CE majors may take classes and labs in microelectronics, calculus-based physics, and digital signal processing, while CS majors will study scientific problem solving, data structures and algorithms, and database design. Both are required to complete courses in digital logic, computer ethics, and computer architecture, among other subjects of study. In Level IV you will focus primarily on computer systems, shaping you into a complete computer engineer. You will study advances topics in computer hardware design and architecture.
